TONGABEZI LODGE, VICTORIA FALLS REGION, 2 NIGHTS
Tongabezi is situated on a wide bend in the Upper Zambezi River and functions as a beautiful base from which to explore the Victoria Falls and its surroundings. The lodge’s location retains its own interest as a safari lodge exploring the Zambezi River, it’s pretty islands and wildlife that comes down to drink on both the Zimbabwe and the Zambian side.
The riverine woodland sheltering Tongabezi’s rooms, each room serviced with a warm and friendly concierge butler, also shelters Tongabezi’s wonderful treehouses. These quirky rooms are more like houses and exceptionally good fun. The established atmosphere of the lodge and mature woodland location under giant Leadwood trees are an ideal starting point for guided canoe and motorboat safaris. Elephant and buffalo populations are very healthy and can often be seen swimming across the mighty Zambezi.
Hippos maintain the African chorus throughout the night and there is a warm ambiance to the location which is rather soporific. Activities such as whitewater rafting and helicopter trips over the Falls can easily be booked with the concierge.

Profile
It’s hard not to be seduced by the charm of Bilimungwe.
Here, the traditions of the African bushcamp meet elegance and style to create a stunning camp that feels like it has grown organically out of the surrounding landscape. Set beneath a huge mahogany tree, the heart of Bilimungwe is the cool, shady lounge area that looks out over one of the camp’s three waterholes. Settle down in a cosy armchair with a sundowner and relax as you watch an enviable display of spectacular birds and animals that clearly feel as comfortable here as you do. With the open waters of the Luangwa River also on your doorstep and a nearby plain where leopard prowl, it’s clear that this is a nature-lover’s paradise, and with Manda Chisanga – Bilimungwe’s award-winning resident guide – to lead you, you could not be in better hands.

Rooms
Bilimungwe’s four raised thatched rooms have been carefully designed to ensure the height of comfort whilst still retaining that authentic bushcamp feel. The tangle of mature mahogany trees that surround camp are echoed in the rich, wood interiors and the beautiful wooden furniture, handmade by local artisans. Bright African textiles bring splashes of colour to the elegant rooms. After an early morning game drive, head back to your room for a refreshing, open-air waterfall shower, or continue the wildlife spectacle from your private deck. Two of the chalets have twin beds (queen-sized beds) and two have doubles (king-sized bed). Bilimungwe sleeps up to eight guests and is open from May to December.

Rooms
Enjoy the serenity of Zungulila from four spacious tents. Built under thatch roofs, each shaded tent has its own private bamboo veranda with immense views over an impressive variety of wildlife – from thirsty elephant at the springs and flocks of birds on the river, to prowling lion and large herds of buffalo on the grassy plains. With stylish interiors, ensuite bathrooms, hot-and-cold running water, outdoor showers and sunken plunge-pool you can enjoy your creatures and your creature comforts in this classic tented bush camp. The rooms will be made up to accommodate the families exactly as they wish to stay.

Activities
If you long to explore Africa as it used to be, then Zungulila is the right place. The expert guides will lead you on foot through some of the park’s most untouched wilderness, where large herds of buffalo roam the grassy plains and thirsty elephants come to drink at the springs and along the river. Activities are focused around walking, but we have opened up a number of game drive loops in the area and so to get even further afield, day and night game drives are also on offer. In the evening, after wading through the river, we invite you to join your hosts for sundowners, or sit around the campfire for a drink, before recounting the day’s adventures over a starlit supper overlooking the river. There is nowhere else as good as this in Africa.

Guided game walks provide a more intimate experience of the wilderness and the opportunity to savour the space and tranquility. A canoe safari is an unobtrusive way of encountering big game. In addition, there is fantastic fishing: tiger fish, bream and a variety of catfish. The camp operates a strict catch-and-release policy and provides standard tackle. Serious fly fishermen may wish to bring their own gear.
